Description

(A) The partially restored property which consists of the main house, two caves, retaining walls and terraces is a work in progress although not far from livable and complete. The property sits on 800 square meters of terraced land; reinforced and shaped by traditional stonemasonry. Local craftsmen using hand cut stone and local techniques have meticulously built the garden walls and exterior of the house. The property is planted with jasmine in three colors, gardenia, bougainvillea, lavender, snapdragons, daisy bushes and honeysuckle vines resulting in a combination of color, fragrance and random beauty. The abundant climbing vines are as much a part of the house as the stone; softening the edges and underscoring the timeless relationship between the mountains and the people who make the mountains their home. An outdoor stone fireplace, planned and built by expert chimney makers, is positioned in the garden to be visible from all sections of the house. In seamless harmony with the structures of the house and the courtyard, the fireplace provides warmth and light to family gatherings in the winter and takes the chill from late summer evenings. The house is a typical Lebanese farmhouse with a flat roof (originally, the roof of a house like this would be covered in dried mud continually replenished throughout the year) and one main floor consisting of 110 m. The roof is now reinforced concrete supported by steel beams. An additional floor could easily and safely be added. The main floor is envisioned as a space that would contain a kitchen, the main bathroom, one sitting room and one bedroom. The current internal walls are not supporting walls and the interior design possibilities are endless. The main level also has access to an expansive terrace with stunning views above the garden, facing the valley and the sea. This terrace is 35 m and has also been reinforced with steel and concrete. Off the main floor and on the right side of the house is a small, secret garden, private from the street and the rest of the house but with yet another incredible view of the sea. This garden is accessible from what would ideally be the main floor bedroom. A door and simple arched window look out onto this garden and a lush carpet of grass. Jasmine and lavender are planted just beneath the window and an ancient grape vine climbs the exterior wall by the door.
